The sealed three-way TYPE 40 Main is designed to operate full range on its own, while optional XTD modules add scalable bass output and configurable cardioid control.
HEDD Audio has introduced the TYPE 40 monitoring platform, comprising the TYPE 40 Main active monitor and the expandable TYPE 40 System. The platform is aimed at rooms that need a full-range main monitor initially but may require additional low-frequency headroom, output and bass directivity as a stereo, post-production or immersive installation grows.
HEDD describes the sealed, Class D-powered TYPE 40 Main as a three-way active design that can operate without a separate subwoofer. The company says it uses two 4-inch midrange drivers, a hand-built Air Motion Transformer tweeter and a high-excursion woofer, with response extending to 20 Hz and peak output of up to 123 dB SPL. Those performance figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent measurements.
The TYPE 40 System adds self-powered XTD modules beneath each Main. HEDD says up to three modules can be fitted per monitor, each using a 10.75-inch woofer and a 700-watt Class D amplifier. According to HEDD, the modules offer selectable ported and closed modes: ported operation prioritizes efficiency and maximum output, while closed operation is intended to favor low-frequency control and definition.
HEDD also says XTD modules can be configured for cardioid operation, and that suitable configurations can reduce rearward bass radiation by approximately 10 dB. Front-firing modules can be combined with cardioid modules, potentially giving installers a way to balance output with control of bass energy directed toward the wall behind the monitors. Results will remain dependent on room design, placement and calibration.
HEDD CTRL manages Main and XTD configurations over Ethernet, the company says, automatically applying settings for selected arrangements. The software provides 12-band parametric EQ at group and individual-loudspeaker levels, preset storage, and support for stereo or immersive installations of up to 250 loudspeakers. HEDD also includes ZERO PHASE, FLAT and OFF Lineariser modes for differing phase-correction and latency requirements, though it has not specified the latency trade-offs between those modes.
HEDD positions the system for mixing, mastering, post-production and immersive audio. The Main can be installed horizontally on stands, integrated into soffits or used with compatible mounting hardware, according to the company.
