Radio 4 Extra programming will move to BBC Sounds as part of a wider plan to end the linear BBC Three, BBC Scotland and Radio 4 Extra services.

The BBC has confirmed that BBC Radio 4 Extra will close as a linear broadcast service in spring 2027, with its programmes to be available on BBC Sounds only, IBC reports. For radio producers and distributors serving the station’s audience, the change makes Sounds the stated destination for programming previously delivered through a scheduled digital-radio service.

BBC Three and BBC Scotland are also set to lose their linear services. BBC Scotland will remain a channel on iPlayer, with its content also available on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland, while BBC Three commissions will continue through iPlayer and other platforms, including YouTube. The Daily Service will be available on BBC Sounds and local radio.

The BBC said the decisions form part of a plan to save £500 million by 2028 amid sustained financial pressures. IBC reports that the closures follow a review of the corporation’s linear services and a continuing shift in audience consumption toward digital platforms.

The report does not set out exact closure dates, nor does it detail how Radio 4 Extra programme availability, rights, scheduling or commissioning will change after the linear service ends.
